Prerequisites: Although this course will follow upon 5573, we will start at the logical beginning of the subject, Maxwell's equations. The essential mathematical preparation is knowledge of the theory of complex variables, including contour integration, and the method of steepest descents.
Grading: The grade in this course will be based upon homework, which will be assigned approximately every week, and on three exams. The weighting will be as follows:
- Homework 30%
- Midterm Exams 2 x 20%
- Final Exam 30%
Late homework will not be accepted. The examination schedule is as follows:

This course will begin from the foundations of electromagnetic theory,
Maxwell's equations. Conservation laws and action
principles will be emphasized. The relativistic (covariant) form of
the theory will be given. The theory of waveguides will be developed
in detail. Variational methods, based of Rayleigh's principle, will be
employed. There will be some discussion of the theory of accelerators,
and of synchrotron and Cerenkov radiation. Exact and approximate
solutions of diffraction problems will be worked out.
Homework Assignments- Assignment #1, Due Friday, February 2: Problems in Chapter 1: 1, 21, 22, 23, 34. Due to the slow start of the course, including my being away on Monday, January 22, I am postponing the due date of the homework by one week.
- Assignment #2, Due Friday, February 16: Problems in Chapter 1: 4, 24, 36, 37. Note that the content of the 2nd and 3rd assignments has been rearranged.
- Note that in contradiction to previous announcement, classes will meet as scheduled during the week of February 19-23.
- Assignment #3, Due Friday, March 2: Problems in Chapter 1: 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 29.

Examinations- Here is the midterm exam I gave last year when I taught this course at Washington University.
- The first exam will be held in NH 319 (third floor conference room) from 12:30-2:30 on Wednesday, March 7. It will cover all material covered in class before we started discussing relativity.
