Prerequisites: Physics 5583 will start from Maxwell's equations, and conservations laws. We will cover special relativity. The bulk of the course will concentrate on radiation theory, including synchrotron radiation, radiation in material media, waveguides, and diffraction theory. The essential mathematical preparation is knowledge of the theory of complex variables, including contour integration, and the method of steepest descents.

Grading: The grade in this course will be based upon homework, which will be assigned approximately every week, and on three exams. The weighting will be as follows:

Homework 35%
Midterm Exams 2 x 20%
Final Exam 25%

Late homework will not be accepted.
The examination schedule is as follows:

In class Exam II	Wednesday, April 17
Final Exam	Wednesday, May 8, 1:30-3:30pm

Tentative Course Outline:

We will begin with a restatement of Maxwell's equations, and the derivation of conservation laws. Relativistic transformations will be seen to flow from Maxwell's equations. The bulk of the course will consist of radiation theory. The theory of waveguides will be developed in detail. Variational methods, based of Rayleigh's principle, will be employed. There will be some discussion of the theory of accelerators, and of synchrotron and Cerenkov radiation. Exact and approximate solutions of diffraction problems will be worked out.

Assignment 4, due February 22: Chapter 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 8. Problems in Electromagnetic Radiation: Chapter 3: 4, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22. Because we have not yet covered all the relevant material, problems 10.4 and 3.15 will be postponed to the next assignment.

Assignment 5, due Monday, March 4: Chapter 10: 4, 11. Problems in Electromagnetic Radiation: Chapter 3: 5, 11, 12, 15.

Assignment 6, due Friday, March 15: Chapter 31: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9.

Assignment 7, due Friday, March 29: Chapter 32: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Assignment 8, due Friday, April 5: Chapter 34: 2, 3, 6; Chapter 35: 1, 3, 4.

Assignment 9, due Monday, April 15: Chapter 36: 2, 3, 5; Chapter 37: 2, 3.

Assignment 10, due Friday, May 3: Chapter 38: 2, 6; Chapter 39: 2, 3; Chapter 40: 3.
