OU Physics Education: A Way Forward

The OU Physics Education Academic Program is an essential and integral part of the Homer L. Dodge Department of Physics and Astronomy academic program servicing OU students and hence the community at large. In this talk an overview of the program will be presented highlighting areas in which improvements can be proposed/made, specifically General Physics Labs 1311 & 1321 and Physics for Non-Science Majors 1114. In particular an emphasis will be given to the curriculum of PHYS 1114 based on comparison and what a number of other departments are doing and current trends on this subject as well as the answer to the fundamental question: Why do we teach 1114?  Also, an emphasis will be given to the status and possible future of the Labs; structure, content, approach and methods. A proposal will be made as to how both Labs can be improved. This will be guided by first hand knowledge of the current state of the program as well as more than 25 years of teaching experience and also available/current research. Most notably, this talk is also guided and debted to excellent conversations with colleagues who have taught these courses here at OU.
