My Music Interests

Fields of the Nephilim

I was raised on bluegrass (Osborne Bros., Bill Monroe, and Mac Wiseman) and old-time country music (Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Bob Wills) and still love them both. When I was about 20 I discovered reggae, and I have a 300 album collection now of mostly heavy dub/experimental. I listen to a lot of space music and even trance and techno.

Bill Monroe. Other than Jackie Gleason, he is the only star whose death upset me.

There are two forms of music I have little use for --- classical and jazz. They bore me.

My favorite artists are (not in any particular order) David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Dub Syndicate (reggae dub group), Tangerine Dream, Bill Monroe, Gary Numan (badly underrated), Mac Wiseman (what a voice!), The Dickies (punk band from LA), Nina Hagen, Gary Clail (industrial funk artist), Fields of the Nephilim (imagine Joe Cocker fronting Pink Floyd), and John Anderson (the country artist, not the singer from Yes).

My main musical love right now is reggae, especially that coming from the On-U Sound label. For a great source of musical reviews, see the UA Journal. Keita Maeda has compiled a huge list of reggae artists and albums. This site is commended on its thorough listing of annual reggae music awards.

As I said before, I love bluegrass music. Check out Cybergrass for the most in-depth web site on bluegrass I could find. It's huge!

Electronic music, often mistaken for New Age music, has been a long-time interest. My favorite group of that genre is Tangerine Dream, although I admit that their music has suffered since the 1980s. Note that this link has audio files and movies available for downloading. Other artists that I find very good are Michael Garrison, Software, Richard Burmer, and Kitaro.

Although I haven't been involved in the music for quite awhile, I still listen occassionally to some progressive music. Check out the The Progressive Rock Web Site for an enormous compilation of progressive artists, from Abbfinoosty to Frank Zappa. Every progressive artist I could think of is included. Many of the artists have downloadable movies to view. There are discographies, reviews, interviews, sound samples, trades, publications, even an encyclopedia of progressive styles. (!)

There are four "rock" artists that, in my opinion, should be rocket-propelled into the Sun --- Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Paul McCartney, and Elton John. I hate them. I hate their music. I hate everything they represent. A pox to them and their families!

Back to my personal interests.
