Answer the Reading Questions below. Please answer each question.

1. What are the four fundamental forces of nature?

2. An object is moving at a constant velocity. What can you say about the net force acting on the object?

3. Compare Newton's second law to the kinematic equations that we studied in Chapters 2 and 3. What physical quantity appears in the second law and in the kinematic equations? What ramifications does this have?

4. Newton's second law has to do with the net force acting on an object. What is meant by the net force acting on an object? Make sure your answer includes the fact that force is a vector.

5. Suppose you place a heavy box on a frozen lake with almost no friction. You stand on the ground next to the lake, so that your feet have friction between them and the ground, and attach a string to the box. You then pull the box with a constant force. What happens?

Nothing.
The box quickly accelerates then moves at a constant speed.
The box gradually accelerates then moves at a constant speed.
The box moves faster and faster as long as you are pulling on the string.

6. If one object is pushing a second object with a certain force, with what force does the second object push back on the first? Are there any exceptions, when your answer would change?

7. What is an inertial reference frame?

8. Why is it important to draw a free-body diagram when solving problems with Newton's 2nd Law?

9. Is the magnitude of the normal force always equal to the magnitude of the weight of an object? Why or why not?

10. Under what circumstance will a rope or string have the same tension at both ends?

Final Question: (This question must be answered to receive any credit). What is one thing from the reading that you didn't understand or need clarified?
