Answer the Reading Questions below. Please answer each question.

1. Define spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum.

2. If an object is moving in a straight line parallel to the x axis along the line y = 1, does this object have a nonzero angular momentum with respect to the point (0,0)? How about with respect to the point (0,1)?

3. What are three necessary ingredients to create torque? (Hint: See the equation that defines torque)?

4. Will a larger force exerted on an object always produce a larger torque? Why or why not?

5. Under what circumstances can we write the angular momentum of an object as L = Iω?

6. What is the result of a net torque on an object?

7. What is the moment of inertia for a ball with mass m attached to a string with no mass, revolving in a circle of radius r.

8. What does the moment of inertia of an object depend on? (There should be at least 3 things listed).

9. If a block and ball with the same mass are moving with the same linear velocity, but the block is sliding and the ball is rolling, which will have the greater kinetic energy? Why?

10. If an object is rolling without slipping how does the velocity of the center of mass relate to the angular velocity? Is this true if the object is slipping while it is rolling.

Final Question: (This question must be answered to receive any credit). What is one thing from the chapter that you didn't understand or need clarified?
