Controlling vibrations in multimode molecular gases and liquids

Presented by Dr.. Thomas Weinacht, JILA

Evolutionary algorithms can be used to learn new ways of controlling atoms and molecules with coherent optical fields. I will discuss the use of an evolutionary algorithm in conjunction with shaped ultrafast optical pulses to control vibrational motion in multimode molecules. Selective excitation of vibrational modes with short shaped pulses may lead to an improved understanding of how vibrational energy is shared between modes, as well as detailed control over chemical reactions.
