The Quantum Hall Effect, Quantum Percolation and The Big Picture

Presented by Prof. Sheena Murphy, OU

In this talk I will attempt to show how my research on the quantum Hall effect fits into the bigger picture of life, love, quantum phase transitions and the universe. The beauty of such phase transitions is that they have universal behaviors independent of the underlying microscopic physics. I will provide a brief introduction to continous quantum phase transitions and critical phenomena before describing how our unique semiconductor samples allow us to measure the quantum percolation exponent.
