A Hands-On Introduction to Nanoscience for Scientists and Engineers

NanoLab is your opportunity for experiencing this emerging-technology field.
- When: Spring 2005, TR/2:30-4:20 pm. (Additional time outside of
the scheduled lab period may be required for your lab projects.)
- Where: Nielsen Hall, Norman Campus.
- What is NanoLab? NanoLab is a hands-on laboratory course in nanotechnology
targeting sophomore undergraduate students in the physical sciences, the biological
sciences, and engineering. The students will gain an understanding of nanotechnology
through hands-on experience with a variety of nanofabrication techniques,
such as lithographic patterning, nanoparticle growth, and self-assembly. Hands-on
experience with state of the art nanometer-scale characterization techniques,
such as atomic-force microscopy, is an integral part of the course. NanoLab
is offered in the spring 2005 semester as a 2 credit hour laboratory course.
- Who should enroll? Students of physical and biological sciences
- Undergraduate students who want to explore topics in nanotechnology.
- Graduate students who want to explore how nanotechnology can be used
in their research.
- What experience is assumed? No specific experience is required;
however, basic sophomore-level laboratory competence is assumed.
- What projects will NanoLab students do? Students will make electroluminescent
panels, light emitting diodes, microfluidic devices, photovoltaic cells, nanoparticles,
and nanopatterned surfaces.
- What topics and techniques will be covered? photolithography, soft
lithography, scanning probe lithography, depositing thin-films, surface modification,
self-assembly, nanoparticles, quantum dots, electron microscopy, optical microscopy,
scanned probe microscopy, clean-room techniques, nanoparticle optics (light
scattering & absorption), crystallography of surfaces.
