JOB STATUS:

HISTORY:

• The instrument shop at the University of Oklahoma, Department of Physics and Astronomy has a long tradition of designing and constructing high quality research equipment. From the beginning the department recognized the importance of staffing the Instrument Shop with quality minded personnel. Otto Krause cir. 1910 ( a German born immigrant) was the first in a long line of dedicated instrument makers. The shop currently supports three full time instrument makers incorporating a broad range of talent and expertise.

EXPERTISE:

• The shop has experience in manufacturing a wide variety of research apparatus: HIGH VACUUM and ULTRA HIGH VACUUM CHAMBERS, LOW TEMPERATURE DEWARS and CRYOSTATS, HI PRESSURE SYSTEMS, REFRACTORY and HIGH TEMPERATURE FURNACES, SPECIALIZED HEATING ELEMENTS, ELECTRON OPTICS, LASER OPTICS, MOLECULAR BEAM SYSTEMS, HIGH ENERGY PARTICLE DETECTION SYSTEMS, GONIOMETER SYSTEMS (motorized and manual).

CAPABILITIES:

• We currently use SMARTCAM ADVANCED MILLING Software . We can translate machine code from any DXF, IGES, or scanned image file. You may FTP the file to us directly, or give us the disc.

The facility supports a full range of equipment;

TURNING:

• 15"/9" X 60" LA BLOND
• 16"/8" X 24" LA BLOND
• 20"/9" X 24" ORLIKON
• 10"/5" X 20" EEC MONARCH with AIR TRACER
• 8"/5" X 20" RIVETT (OUR 1920 CLASSIC BEAUTY)
• JEWELERS LATHE

MILLING:

• 2 BRIGPORT VERTICAL MILLS
• CINCINNATI HORIZONTAL W/ DIVIDING HEAD
• HAAS VF-0 VERTICAL MACHINING CENTER 4 AXIS 16"x X 20"y X 20"z

DRILLING:

• 12" ALLEN (STANDARD DRILL PRESS)
• 36" CINCINNATI BICKFORD RADIAL 9" COLUMN / ALL GEARED
• SMALL VERY HIGH SPEED DUMORE

GRINDING:

• BROWN AND SHARP #13 UNIVERSAL
• (ID, OD, AND SURFACE)

WELDING:

• ALUMINUM MIG 300A
• STEEL MIG 300A
• TIG 300A
• PLASMA .5-150A

SOLDERING:

• Virtually all soldering and brazing.

CUTTING:

• Standard gas cutting up to 4"
• PLASMA cutting to 1/2"

OTHER:

• A Small cabinet shop and spray painting facility is on site. We also build rudimentary electronic systems e.g. motor control, furnace control, linear power supplies.

MATERIALS:

• We work with a broad range of materials, including: all stable metals, all plastics, glass and ceramics, graphite, MACOR, AEROGEL, all woods.
